Carnival

by Antonia Czinger

A bunch of sideshow performers have settled down, forming a sort of marginalized society run by a diva-licious, bearded lady called the Matriarch. Within this society, freaks and geeks are meant to celebrate their abnormalities while putting on shows and raking in cold hard cash just by existing. However, the harmony of the carnival is threatened by the arrival of Lawrence, an ambitious Discovery Channel producer, who endeavors to make a television show about the place. Lawrence's good intentions, preconceived notions, and unexpected romantic tendencies soon cause tensions to fly high, even as the performers adjust to the increased media attention. Life becomes especially perplexing for Simon and Olivia, sixteen-year-old twins who have only ever lived on the carnival.
Carnival explores what it is to live in a certain society as well as the relationship between the body (however twisted) and the mind (however twisted), especially in relation to ones sexuality. The play is about defining oneself and escaping oneself within the parameters of the human body. It's also about money problems, awkward make-outs, and what to do about too large pores. Also, at one point someone eats a spring role really suggestively.
This will be a workshop performance for a script in progress. The final production will be in February.
