Expecting Isabel

by Lisa Loomer

Miranda and Nick are ready to have a child. But when life doesn't go according to plan, they decide to do whatever's necessary to get their baby: even if that means testing sperm fertility by injecting it into a hamster egg.

An ensemble-driven comedy, "Expecting Isabel" follows Nick and Miranda throughout the whirlwind of not-quite-parenthood and the people whose paths they cross in the process, whether at fertility treatment support groups, raucous family dinners or adoption agencies. It deals with the ideas of family, what it means to love someone, trying to be more than just the genes inside of us, the life-altering choices we make throughout life, and how those choices have impacts in ways we will never understand.

***This particular production is going to be driven by movement design. We are auditioning in the September Casting Cycle because we want to start teaching the movement in December, but there will be no rehearsals before then.

Our movement design will be based in tableaus and stage pictures, so when it's time for Miranda to be in a bookstore, for example, the ensemble will literally form a bookstore around Miranda with their bodies. It will be very minimalist, very Brechtian, and the twelve ensemble members will never leave the stage. It's about the world falling into place, and then falling away in a split second as the scene changes.

We want this project to be incredibly organic, all about collaboration and learning from each other, having the opportunity to play and create something beautiful onstage. No previous movement experience is necessary!
