Directed by Isabel Mendia: A Reimagined Production of a Classic Story of Humor, Heartbreak, and Goodness

The Heiress, based on Washington Square by Henry James, tells the story of Catherine, an unlikely heroine. Torn between a desire to win her father's approval and passion for the first man who has ever declared his love for her, Catherine faces an agonizing choice, and eventually becomes all too aware of the restrictions that others seek to place on her freedom.

This production, placing the Victorian tale in the change-filled years of 1958-1961, uses wit and heartbreak to prove that strength and happiness does not come from the approval of others, but instead arises from self-confidence in the face of a society that refuses to value one’s character.
